Collecting and Keeping

A Post – Creative Voyage – Project

“Who are we, who is each one of us, if not a combination of experiences, information, books we have read, things imagined? Each life is an encyclopaedia, a library, an inventory of objects, a series of styles, and everything can be constantly shuffled and reordered in every way conceivable.”

Italo Calvino, Six Memos For The Next Millennium

Activity inspiration: Shannon’s Handmade Table + Margaret Olley’s Home Installation

Collecting lovely objects is very satisfying, it can be planned, impulsive, even compulsive. At some point, though, we make decisions about what to keep, and that’s when objects assume a value beyond their material beauty, they become messengers from another time or place.

We have all made these decisions, we all have a selection from a bigger collection that in my case, threatened to subsume me, but most of us still go on collecting. We did it last week, again!

I thought it would be fun to see how we plan to incorporate our recent acquisitions into our existing collections. So, the idea is to create a couple of tableaux demonstrating the “shuffling and reordering” that Italo Calvino describes above. And, if we adopt Margaret Olley’s approach to order, anything goes!

The best way for me to download images is from WhatsApp. I will make an album here and we can decide later which publisher we invite to produce our masterpiece.

Here are a couple of quick ones I did yesterday:

Early Shannon pieces, needs cropping
